St. Nicholas Day - Orthodox Christmas

Origins

For many years our founder, Bob Wortock, was unhappy with the slow progression of secularism as it overtook the Christmas season. There were no Christmas banners to be seen on Main Street, no Christmas carols being sung or songs being played, and a general sense of hesitation to even say the words “Merry Christmas”. Eventually Bob felt called to action, and decided he would try to rekindle the Christmas spirit by getting a nativity display approved and set up in downtown Racine. He shared his vision with local clergy and organizations, and despite their general support they were skeptical that he would be successful in his endeavor for approval from the city.

Getting Approved

Bob decided to find out what he needed to do. He went to City Hall, where he asked questions and gathered information about what was needed. He discovered that while administration and general staff were receptive and supportive, elected officials and those with decision-making power were resistant. He found that there were required appearances before several committees, written proposals, cost estimates, and various approval procedures. Despite working diligently to accomplish all of these steps, it was late in the calendar year by the time he reached the final step for approval, and his plan was rejected due to time constraints. The next year, Bob was prepared. He started the approval process early. He also submitted several letters to the editor of the Journal Times, which were all published and helped garner public support. He also gained the written endorsement from over 16 local churches. His proposal that year was rejected several times, but after finally presenting the list of endorsements from the churches, the city reluctantly approved!

The First Display

After finally achieving approval from the city, the new goal was now to get the first Nativity display designed, built, and installed on Monument Square in downtown Racine on or before St. Nicholas Day, December 6th. Churches were called and announcements were made. Volunteers came forward and offered their help. Families, friends, and volunteers from all over the Racine area contributed in a variety of ways. From offering their garage as a workspace, contributing their knowledge or skill set, helping with transportation, to simply offering advice or cocoa with cookies, the combined effort was extensive. Once the Nativity display was complete, dozens of people came to watch on the day of the unveiling, in addition to the news media. There was a small ceremony, and those in attendance filed past to view, and some of them lingered to pray. When interviewed, Bob stated that all were welcome in the public square as long as they followed the policies and procedures established by the City of Racine.

Today

Hundreds of visitors come to the Nativity every year. Many families take photos in front of the display. Christmas carolers gather and sing. Even wedding parties have been known to gather in front of the display for their wedding shoot! The Nativity display has become an expected tradition and a staple of downtown Racine. Despite all of the hurdles and challenges overcome throughout the years, we now have the full support from the current mayor of Racine, Cory Mason, as well as many local churches, businesses, and organizations.
